By planting people-made forests we transform our garbage into purified air. By planting food forests we transform some of our garbage into compost for mulching nutritious foods.
Food Forests
Food forests can be created by applying the Principles of Permaculture to growing nutritious food around human habitations be they privately owned, communally owned or public property.
Typically, a mature food forest mimics the seven layers of natural forests to create nutritional abundance in the form of biodiverse food sources. These layers comprise tall fruit and nut trees, shorter fruit trees, shrubs, herbs, root crops, groundcovers and climbing vines.
Even small properties can become involved in producing nutritional food by incorporating as many layers as they have space for.
What we offer is an introduction to the ethics and principles of permaculture.
This is offered as a group booking to schools and organisations on dates that are mutually agreed upon.

The UN defines a forest as an area of a minimum of 500m², with a tree cover of 10-30%.
At Blue Blue Earth we encourage the planting of indigenous trees, with an eye on climate change.
Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) sequesters eight times more carbon dioxide than any other tree. This South African plant makes it the ideal tree to plant if you do not have the space for the eight trees that are required for one person to obtain the oxygen needed in a lifespan of eighty years. It is a good option for small built up areas as it grows well in pots and is drought resistant.
For large properties, public parks and street planting the BIG FIVE Indigenous Trees to plant in Johannesburg area:
Celtis Africana-White Stinkwood) Searsia lancia (formerly Rhus lancea) (Karee) Olea europaea subsp. Africana (Wild Olive) Combretum erythrophyllum (River Bushwillow) Acacia karroo (Sweet Thorn) Reference: Professor Mary Scholes, the developer of the Climate Leadership Program in South Africa.
This is offered as a group booking to schools and organisations on dates that are mutually agreed upon.
